UC Davis and plaintiffs Kelsey Brust, Jessicq Bulala and Laura Ludwig settled the lawsuit that was filed twoyearsx ago, and was certified as a class action in October. The settlemenrt establishes a set of standards for femalr participation rates in varsity sportx at UC Davis and provides additional financial supporrt for club sports atthe university, a news releas said. The settlement must be approved bythe U.S. District Cour t in Sacramento after members of the classz have been notified of thespecific terms. Brust and Bulalas played club field hockey. Ludwig had wrestlingh experience and played club They brought suit in July 2007 under the 1972 Patsy T.
Mink Equal Opportunity in Educationh Act, also known as Title IX. The settlement create a 10-year plan for UC Davis to reachh specific proportions of male and femaled athletes bythe 2019-20 school year. The university will either add women’ss intercollegiate teams or will take other stepss to ensure equal accommodation of student interest invarsityy sports. UC Davis has also agreed to contributew $110,000 to a fund for the developmengt ofclub sports.
The case was schedulede to go to trialin “UC Davis has a solid history of commitment to its femalse athletes and coaches and to expanding opportunitiess for women in competitivde sports,” Greg Warzecka, UC Davis athletics said in the release. “While the parties have a difference in opiniobn about whether litigationwas necessary, we’ree pleased that we have reached an outcome that benefits both sides.” “We are thrilled,” Ludwigf said in the release. “It feels good to have the university’ss support for women’s athletics through this resolution. We are prous to have come up with a result that will benefitt Davis for yearsto come.
It will create more opportunities for womenn to participate in the sportss thatthey love.” During the litigation, UC Davisx created an open application process and selectedx women’s field hockey as a new intercollegiate to join the 14 othere women’s varsity teams at UC A team has been selected, and competition will startr in the fall. “The time frames set out in the settlement maximizse the potential to add varsity opportunities for womejn inthe future,” Warzecka said in the release. “Wer are continually trying to maintain our compliance effortd to give women athletees the very best access to intercollegiatwe athleticscompetition possible.
” Establishing fieled hockey as a women’s intercollegiated sport at the university, Brust said, “willp allow field hockey players to contribut at even a higher level to the campus, and will providee incredible opportunities for many young women.” Noreen Farrell of Equa l Rights Advocates represented the plaintiffs with Moniqude Olivier of the Sturdevant Law Firm and Kristinj Galles of Equity Legal. “When we give women a fair share ofathletic opportunities, we are developinv leaders on and off the field,” Farrelpl said.
